The last week of '08

The last week of 2008 has been a pretty laid back one. It has been so nice to spend time at home and not be rushing around like crazy. In fact this is the only week out of the entire year that we have NO activities to go to! No karate, soccer, baseball, dance, chorus, girl scouts, homework, or school activities! Woo-Hoo!

We've had the chance to visit with out of town friends. Our friends Roger and Shloe were in town from Minnesota, so we went out to Banning for an afternoon to spend with them and their girls.

(Christy, Shloe with Callie & Cora, Me with Zoe)

We've spent a lot of time building Legos too! What would the week after Christmas be without spending hours building lego sets. This time it is Speed Racer cars, Indiana Jones, and recycling trucks.

Zoe got a refurbished laptop from Grandpa this week too. So the kids have had lots of fun playing with that too.

Other than that we've been playing lots of games, watching some tv, reading books, riding scooters, visiting grandma to help her hang wall pictures in their new house, doing a little shopping, and spending A LOT of time in our pajamas! Tonight we will get ready to ring in the New Year!

Merry Christmas!!

Christmas morning was so much fun! Cooper was up at 6:30 and came in to our room with a big smile on his face! But before the kids came downstairs Zoe discovered a note that Santa had left for her under the tree in her room and that he had filled he little felt stockings. It said, "Thank you for believing in me Zoe! Love, Santa Claus" She couldn't believe it! Then they raced downstairs!
Santa brought their electric razor scooters and the football jerseys they had asked for! Then mom and dad got them an assortment of board games, video games, legos, lotions, etc.
They couldn't wait to ride their scooters, but they only got to do it for a few minutes because of the rain...

We then headed to Grandma and Grandpa's house to open more presents and spend the day together playing, relaxing, and eating! It was so nice to have the family together. Grandma, Grandpa, Poppe, Greg, Jeff, Jax, Cole, Sonya, Martin, and us.

Merry Christmas to all of our family and friends! We are so blessed to have all of you in our lives.

Christmas Eve

This year was a very different Christmas Eve for us. Usually we spend the whole day and night at my parents house, but because they just moved and finished construction and haven't had a chance to do much for Christmas, and the fact that we didn't want to leave all 3 dogs again, we decided to stay home. We had a really nice day together though. The kids and I spent the morning relaxing, baking our sugar cookies and decorating them, and making loaves of bread.
In the afternoon we went to the candlelight service at church. It was a wonderful service with great music, an amazing message, and beautiful candle lighting. I'm so glad we got to go and experience some of the true meaning of Christmas.

Afterwards we headed to Macaroni Grill for a nice Italian dinner. The kids loved their shirley temple drinks!
Once we got home it was time for the kids to open their presents that they bought for each other. They both saved up their money and were so excited to give each other something. Zoe gave Cooper a tiger Webkinz that he's been wanting.
Cooper gave Zoe a clock radio. She was so happy, she's been asking for one for months!
After baths and Christmas pajamas, we curled up on the couch with hot chocolate to watch "Santa Claus is Coming to Town". Then it was time to put out cookies, milk, and carrots for Santa and to sprinkle the reindeer food on the grass that Cooper had made at school.
Can't wait to see what Santa brings in the morning!

Gingerbread House

One of our Christmas traditions is to decorate a gingerbread house. Usually we do it up in the mountains, but we ran out of time this year. So here it is:

Big Bear Vacation

To celebrate my parents 40th wedding anniversary, they decided to take the whole family for a small getaway. We had originally planned on going to Mammoth, but due to a long string of circumstances beyond our control, we changed plans and headed to the local mountains. Joe, the kids, and I decided to head up Friday night. Due to the large amount of snow that had accumulated the previous week, the roads were a bit treacherous. Joe wasn't feeling too well, so I took the wheel and headed up. We had to stop to put chains on at about 9:30pm. It was freezing cold! After we (well, mostly Joe) got the chains on, we realized they were too big. So we ended up having to pay a guy $40 to cut them and re-install. But he was done in about 5 minutes, so we were happy! We finally arrived at our condo at 11:30 pm and it was 15 degrees outside. Brrrr!

We woke up early the next morning and got a fire started. The kids were so excited to finally be there! We spent the morning eating breakfast, sitting by the fire, and playing games.
My parents, brothers, and nephews waited to come up on Saturday. It took them 5 hours to get there! So while we waited we headed outside for some fun in the snow. We couldn't believe how much snow there was! The kids had fun climbing the hills of snow and even sledding through the parking lot.
The rest of the family made it by lunchtime so we met at Boo Bears in the village for a great lunch. It was nice to finally have everyone together.
The afternoon was filled with hours of sledding! We had so much fun! The snow was knee to thigh deep and very difficult to move through, but luckily someone had cleared the perfect path before us.

Grandpa spent lots of time building this great snowman for the kids.

(My brothers, Greg, Jeff, and I)

After a fun day it was time to head out for a nice dinner to celebrate their anniversary. My brothers and I had arranged to have a nice bottle of champagne waiting and we gave them an engraved picture frame. I feel so fortunate to be a part of such an amazing family and am truly blessed to have the parents that I do!

The next day was all about snowboarding! I took Zoe and Cooper and my nephews Jax and Cole, while my parents and Joe watched at the bottom of the hill and held all our extra layers as we peeled them off! Luckily Cole is already a great snowboarder and Zoe was well on her way. Jax improved so much that day and by the afternoon him and Zoe were perfect little buddies, just riding the lift and coming down all by themselves. I was amazed at their skill and control! Cooper, on the other hand, was more about just going as fast as he could until he fell. He needs a little more practice! It was a very fun day, but I was extremely sore! Am I just too old for this??
The evening was spent with the kids in the hot tub, playing games, staying warm and ordering pizza.
We left early the next morning before the next storm hit too hard. Time to finally take the chains off!

Thanks Mom and Dad for a fantastic weekend! Happy 40th Anniversary! We love you!

A New Belt!

(Saying the Pledge of Allegiance)

Tonight we watched Cooper receive his Orange Belt in karate. Since the program he's in did a big change in September, he has been working hard for 4 months to get this belt. Although the program has had its ups and downs and there are many days I just don't feel like getting him there, he is really enjoying himself and is doing very well.
(Showing off their kicking skills)

(After almost 2 hours, finally receiving his certificate and belt!)

Congratulations Cooper!! We are so proud of you!

Holiday Open House

Today is one of my favorite days of the year at the kids school. Their last day before the holiday break, the school hosts an Open House. Each grade level does a singing performance, and then parents can spend time with the kids in their individual classrooms doing different activities and crafts. Since Joe was working today I spent the morning running back and forth so I could do bits and pieces with Zoe and Cooper.

I started the morning by listening to Zoe's performance. I really think my little girl has had enough singing for the month. Between all the choir practices, girl scout caroling, and now this, she's tired! But she did a great job and was warm and cozy in their winter pajamas!

(Maddyn and Zoe)

After Zoe's performance I raced over to Cooper's classroom to do some holiday crafts with him. I told him to save a few to do with me, so we worked on his reindeer food and candy train.
Cooper has had a wonderful student teacher this year, but today is her last day. We will miss Mrs. Schwartz so much!
Then it was time for Cooper's performance. He got right in the front row, center stage. It is so interesting to see how different my kids are. Zoe loves the spotlight and loves to sing and perform whenever she can. Cooper on the other hand can be very shy and doesn't like to sing (especially in public)! But he pulled through and did a fantastic job!

To finish off the morning I went back to Zoe's classroom since she was finishing up some crafts. They have studying holidays around the world over the past month, so they did a lot of different activities from different countries. After the crafts were cleaned up we moved on to an international feast. We had eggrolls, potato pancakes with applesauce and sour cream, butternut squash soup, and rice pudding. Zoe loved every bit of it!
It was a fun morning, but I know we're all looking forward to a break from school and activities over the next couple weeks!
